“I’m thankful to Placement Year International” Shane Irani.

Shane is studying Sports Coaching at Bournemouth University and working with a football academy in Australia for his placement year (September 2022 to May 2023). 

Why did you choose to do a placement as part of your degree?

Gain valuable knowledge and hands on experience of the career I wish to pursue.

 

Why did you choose Australia?

Seemed appealing and inviting, also many opportunities in football and space for the football sector to grow.

What are you doing for your placement?

Football coaching at a soccer academy in Sydney.

What is your role?

Assisting coaches in effective sessions, set up of equipment and pitches and help out of logistics. Directly coach children of multiple ages 2-12 and involvement with the school of excellence in more technical based training. Also refereeing of tournaments.

What skills or knowledge have you gained during your placement?

  • How to respond to different age groups and how to motivate/reward different children.
  • Effective set up of a whole tournament.

Did you find it difficult adapting to a new working environment?

No.

What skills have you developed?

  • Organising and leading appropriate sessions
  • Understanding the role of a coach
  • Teaching all ages and levels of children in another country and culture

How has your placement helped you develop as a person?

Met new people especially experienced coaches who I can learn from.

How would you summarise your experience with Placement Year International?

An experience that they helped to organise and accommodate with a friendly approach. I believe I found the right host company in the right area which I’m thankful to Placement Year International for.

Do you have any useful tips for future interns?

Hit the ground running and make the most of your time because it can fly quick.
