Susmita studies International Tourism Management at UCB and joined us for a Hospitality placement in the UK, for 2024-2025. 

What’s your background (uni, course etc)?

International Tourism Management at UCB.

Why did you choose to do a placement year as part of your degree?

To get the hands-on experience I need to complement my studies, improve my practical skills, and gain a better understanding of how the hospitality industry works in real life.

Why did you decide to do your placement in the UK?

The UK has a strong reputation in hospitality, with world-class hotels and high standards of service. I wanted to challenge myself, experience a new culture, and develop skills in an international working environment.

What are you doing for your placement?

I’m working in the Rooms Department at a 5-star hotel, ensuring rooms and guest areas are maintained to the highest standards. I support the team with daily cleaning, organisation, and guest requests.

What is your role?

My role is a Housekeeping Assistant, where I am responsible for preparing guest rooms, keeping public areas tidy, assisting with laundry, and making sure guests feel comfortable and well looked after.

What skills or knowledge have you gained from your placement?

I’ve learned attention to detail, time management, teamwork, and how to meet luxury service standards. I’ve also gained confidence in communicating with colleagues and understanding guest expectations.

Did you find it difficult adapting to a new working environment?

At the beginning it was a little challenging because everything was new—the routines, the standards, and the pace. But with support from my colleagues and supervisors, I adapted quickly.

Have you received much support and advice from your work colleagues

Yes, my colleagues have been very supportive. They’ve given me guidance on how to improve my work, shared useful tips, and encouraged me to keep learning and progressing.

How has your placement helped you develop as a person?

It has made me more confident, independent, and responsible. I’ve also improved my ability to work under pressure and developed a stronger work ethic.
